Does your child have a school project to do on penguins? Are they wanting to know more about the different types of penguins? This book would be a great resource. There is a LOT of information in here along with some great photos. It is definitely a book for the older child with an inquiring mind. Young children (Kindergarten and down, maybe even a little older) would get overwhelmed. I think this book is actually informative for all older ages, even adults. So what are some of the things you may learn in this book that you did not already know?
Penguins spend two thirds of their lives in the water * Although covered with feathers, they cannot fly. * The only flightless birds that can swim underwater. * Unlike other birds, a penguin's bones are solid. * Penguins have webbed feet and sharp claws. * It is not known how penguins sleep when they are in the water. * Just like us, they cannot breathe underwater. However unlike us they can drink seawater! * They swallow their prey whole and can dive to depths of 1800 feet. * 17 different types * Only live in the southern hemisphere * A layer of blubber helps keep them warm in some of the extremely cold temperatures they live in. * When molting, which can take several weeks, the penguins cannot go into the water so have to go without food. * Emperor penguins are the largest penguins and only live in Antarctica. * King penguins are the second largest penguin and live on the islands surrounding Antarctica. * Gentoo penguins lay two eggs which both hatch - unusual for penguins. * Humboldt penguins live in warmer climates and are endangered * Marconi penguins are the most populous * Fiorland penguins are found in New Zealand * Rockhopper penguins are the smallest of the crested penguins. * Snares penguins only breed on the Snares Islands - photos are rare * Adelie penguins live in Antarctica * Royal penguins are only found on Macquarie islands. * Have you ever seen the Chinstrap penguin? You will if you read this book! * African penguins are also known as Jackass penguins as they sound like a donkey braying.
